ROYALTY TRUSTS

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the oil business in Western Canada had become very active, with oil company agents travelling the countryside and signing freehold owners to mineral leases. The owner of the freehold title would often set up some form of Royalty Trust to administer and distribute the royalty should oil or gas be discovered on the land. The trust would issue certificates entitling the holder to a portion of the royalty.
