Mineral Trusts and Agencies were used to hold the mineral title itself. These were set up to address the problem of fragmentation of the ownership of the title and transfer costs as it was bequeathed to younger generations. Trust certificates representing an ownership share of the title were issued under an agreement that allowed for management of the title to be operated by a majority vote, making the title more easily leased if there are lost or uncooperative parties. The certificates are more easily transferred as compared to a mineral title.
